This is the second article in our series on Choosing The Right Addiction Treatment Center. You can read the first article here.

5. Holistic Approach

The concept of holistic practices against the traditional 12-step treatment is widely debated. Some facilities treat addiction as a chronic disease, while others as a condition that requires a different approach. Although there are no set rules in choosing the right addiction treatment center, some methods prove more successful than others. Addressing the underlying issue, as well as treating the addict as a whole, is a solid approach towards recovery.

As with every medical condition, when treating only the symptoms and not the patient as a whole, the results are partial. Holistic rehabilitation programs address the entire person, rather than the addiction only. Therefore, the benefits of holistic approaches such as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, homeopathy, massage, herbal treatment and more, allow the addict’s body to clear off the toxins on a natural, healthy way.

6. Aftercare Program

There are different types of aftercare programs. Centers design an aftercare program according to their residents’ success and the approaches that work the best for them. Some of the aftercare programs include only 12-steps meetings, together with psychotherapy.

Others are highly individualized, where the addict continues all the activities outside of the treatment center. They include individual, group therapy, exercise, and healthy nutrition combined with 12-step meetings and community work.

Accordingly, the right addiction treatment center will provide the support system that will keep the addict from relapse.

7. Individualized Treatment

The right addiction treatment center will offer an evaluation of the addict as an individual. It will consider the psychiatric, physical, and emotional aspect of the addiction. Afterward, the center’s specialist will guide and advise the addict and the family into the appropriate treatment approach.

‘One size fits all’ is not recommended when considering rehab. If the addict has an underlying mental illness, such as depression or anxiety, the treatment must cover that aspect as well.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Treatment varies depending on the type of drug and the characteristics of the patients. Matching treatment settings, interventions, and services to an individual’s particular problems and needs is critical to his or her ultimate success in returning to productive functioning in the family, workplace, and society.”

Also, “An individual’s treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure that it meets his or her changing needs. A patient may require varying combinations of services and treatment components during the course of treatment and recovery. “

8. Long-term Treatment

The time the addicts spends in rehabilitation is crucial for long-term recovery.

According to NIDA, “The appropriate duration for an individual depends on the type and degree of the patient’s problems and needs. Research indicates that most addicted individuals need at least three months in treatment to reduce or stop their drug use significantly and that the best outcomes occur with longer duration of treatment. Recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment.”

9. Unique Therapy Approach

Research shows that treatment centers should give a chance to non-mainstream treatments implementation. Art therapy, music therapy, or hypnotherapy show significant results for anxiety and stress relieve, reducing tension and spiritual enlightenment, especially among woman addicts. It can be wise to consider this approach to therapy as well.

10. Choose a Treatment Center that Includes Your Family

A family is the addict’s support system. Some of the underlying issues that need attention during the stay in a treatment center are from childhood family problems. If the addict returns to the same family system, the chances of relapsing are higher. So, the treatment center must include a family program.

The family needs to understand addiction and what it takes for a loved one to heal. Your loved one is in need of support, love, and care. Hence, consider avoiding addiction centers that are punitive and forbid family presence in the entire process.

Family meetings will reveal if there is something in the family’s behavior that may trigger the addict to relapse. Also, the positive effect of support and unconditional love should never be underestimated. The family might be the primary reason the addict wants to recover. If the center’s strategy is to take that away from the addict, then that is not the right addiction treatment center for anyone.

11. The Right Addiction Treatment Center Should be a Credited Facility with an Expert Staff

Never trust a treatment center that is not accredited by a well-established, professional organization. Facilities will say anything to get you on board. They may sometimes lie about their success rate, treatment methods or reviews.
Double check their staff, expertise, and the number of trained professionals. Look for a loving, caring staff that will help you break the cycle of denial and give you or your loved one the desire to stay.
